Day of Remembrance, 2017: Arts of Resistance  - Call for Submissions
This year marks the 75th anniversary of the signing of Executive Order 9066 that called for the forced removal of approximately 120,000 men, women, and children of Japanese ancestry from the West Coast of the United States into government run internment camps.  Many of these people were American born U.S. citizens and were incarcerated without due process of law.   Instead, the bombing of Pearl Harbor and wartime propaganda was used to justify the Federal government’s blatant disregard for the Constitution in the name of national security.

The parallels to current events are uncanny and frightening.  But the swift and powerful responses from like minded citizens to resist the Trump agenda are truly inspiring.

Kaiho Collective will be marking this year’s Day of Remembrance by launching a call for submissions for original pieces of resistance art.

We would like to encourage those out there who would not consider themselves artists, creative, or even artistically inclined to submit something to this collective endeavor.  Did you make a sign for any of the many protests since inauguration day?  Guess what? That’s art!  Did you knit a pussy hat?  That’s art!  Do you have a song, a poem, or a tweet that mocks “alternative facts?” That’s art, and we want it and want to SHARE IT. We will do this by dedicating part of our website to a curation of YOUR work, sharing across social media platforms (Twitter, FB, Instagram), AND if we receive more than  20 submissions, we will look to present the work in a public forum in the Bay Area.

Resistance requires us to be fearless. Let’s inspire each other to be brave!  Never submitted anything before?  All the more reason to share now!

All submissions can be sent to  kaihocollective@gmail.com
where we will vet and post for the enjoyment of all!  Please write a brief one paragraph  description of your work and any personal comments you have about what inspired you or why you created it.
Deadline for the first round of submissions is March 19th, 2017.
